Gore-Tex - What is it? What makes this fascinating fabric so special?
Gore-Tex is a highly durable, breathable, waterproof and windproof fabric. That's probably why you've seen it in many expensive outdoor clothing, footwear and accessories. Gore-Tex is made of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE.
Creating a fabric that blocks rain is relatively easy. Creating a fabric that blocks rain while allowing sweat to escape is a much more difficult task. Here lies the success of Gore-Tex.
The core of Gore-Tex technology revolves around an extremely thin membrane. This contains more than 9 billion microscopic pores. These are about 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water, but 700 times larger than a vapor molecule. What this means is that water in its liquid form cannot pass through the inside of the membrane. Water as moisture vapor, for example sweat, is allowed to get out. Sealed seams ensure that Gore-Tex products are completely waterproof and cannot leak through.
