SKATERS BUCKETLIST –
MACBA: The Ultimate Skateboarding Mecca in Barcelona
If you’re a skater, there’s a good chance the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, a.k.a MACBA, is on your radar. It’s one of the most well-known skateboarding spots in the world. It’s the kind of place that makes the heart of any skater beat a little faster—all skaters probably dreamt of skating the spot; made up lines in their head with the tricks they would do there. It’s one of those destinations that should be on every skateboarder’s bucket list, and for good reason.
Why MACBA?
MACBA is located in the heart of the El Raval in Barcelona, a city that has become synonymous with skateboarding culture. But what makes MACBA so special? Well, it’s not just the fact that it’s a beautiful, minimalist museum of modern art—it’s the space surrounding it that’s become a global skateboarding hotspot.
The plaza in front of the museum, known as "Plaça dels Àngels," is arguably the most famous skate spot in the world. Skateboarders from every corner of the globe come to MACBA to experience its flawless ledges, smooth ground, and architectural features that have made it a mecca for both amateurs and professionals alike.
The Perfect Playground for Skaters
MACBA’s plaza offers everything a skateboarder could want: long, smooth, and wide ledges, stairs, railings, and a most importantly a great atmosphere. Over the years, it has become a symbol of the kind of skateboarding that blends technical skill with creativity. Whether you’re grinding the ledges, hitting the stair sets, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, it’s impossible not to feel the history and energy that skateboarding has embedded into this location.
Many pro skateboarders have made their mark here, and some of the most memorable skate videos have featured skaters carving their way through the plaza. It’s a place where locals and international visitors mix, where passionate skaters share stories, tips, and, of course, tricks. It’s an ‘open-air skate park’ in the heart of a bustling city.
An International Hotspot for Skateboarders
The reason MACBA draws skateboarders from all over the world isn’t just about the technical challenges of the spot; it’s the community that surrounds it. Skaters who come here often do so not only for the skate spot but for the chance to meet like-minded people. The plaza becomes a gathering spot where skateboarders, tourists, and locals converge to share their love of the sport. You’ll find everything from spontaneous sessions with people you’ve just met. On any given day, you’ll find skaters from every corner of the world, from seasoned pros, to beginners trying to land their first grinds. It's a truly inclusive and welcoming environment, with no barriers for entry. All you need is a board and you’re part of the family.
The utopic Spanish skatespot is in danger
Since March of 2024, Barcelona targets the world-famous skate spot to end a 'monopoly' of skaters on the square. The mayor of Barcelona unveiled the redevelopment plan for Plaça dels Àngels, the iconic square in front of the MACBA museum that has become Barcelona's unofficial skate park.
Expected to be completed by early 2027, the intervention will transform the MACBA outdoor podium, known for its use as a skateboarding area, into a green space with trees, benches and playgrounds. The proposed reform would potentially displace the skating community, which has been the source of numerous complaints from residents.
Collboni made it clear to the skaters that the future space will be versatile and that no one will be able to "monopolize" it. The new project aims to create a more welcoming and comfortable environment that meets the needs of the 21st century, the mayor said. "It will be greener and designed for coexistence, for the elderly, for children, with playgrounds". Now the skaters are afraid to lose this iconic spot and that they will not integrate anything skateable in the new plans.
Keep MACBA skate-able!
For skateboarders, MACBA is much more than just a place to skate— It’s a place where art, history, and passion converge, creating an atmosphere that every skater should experience at least once in their lifetime. Whether you’re cruising the plaza, trying to nail that perfect trick, or simply enjoying the shared energy of the community, MACBA remains a bucket-list destination that continues to inspire skaters from all over the world.
So, if you're planning your next skateboarding trip, Barcelona—and MACBA—should be at the very top of your list. Go fast because the spot might disappear soon. If you want to help out, for what it matters, sign the petition below.
