Libby Tannenbaum, in her doctoral thesis (James Ensor, an Iconographic Study, 1942), was the first to argue that the characters in Ensor's art are related to his life and biography. Many researchers followed her lead and suggested that The Intrigue refers to the failed marriage of Ensor's sister Mitche.
Mitche married Alfred Taen Hee Tseu, a Chinese-English merchant, in 1891. After their marriage, she moved to Berlin, but soon returned to Ostend with her daughter after the end of her relationship. However, this drama cannot have been literally incorporated into the painting, as Ensor completed The Intrigue before these events.
The painting possibly depicts a carnival scene centred on slander and ridicule. The main figure, a man hiding in his coat, is surrounded by women who accuse or mock him. Ensor, known for his complex relationship with women, often emphasises masks and exaggerated facial expressions in his work.
For the composition, Ensor took inspiration from Rubens' Christ and the adulteress. He used real masks and carnival accessories to bring his fantasy worlds to life. The painting also symbolises hypocritical denunciations, where masks and gestures are emphasised.
The Intrigue is one of Ensor's most iconic works and reflects his fascination with masquerades: ‘The mask tells me: fresh tones, lush scenery, unexpected gestures and delightful turbulence.’
The edition is limited to 20 pieces worldwide, comes with a certificate and custom-made linen bag.
